Window Displays

I have worked in retail for a number of years now and watching 'Mr Selfridge' on ITV has opened my eyes to the ways in which idea of "shopping" came about.

I'm in my early 20s, easily described as part of the consumer generation and take pride in remaining on top of current trends. In my role as a visual merchandiser I strive to make our store the most exciting place to be on the high street and watching the  development of this advertising technique truly fascinates me.

The idea of "window dressing" and creating exciting store layouts  have become an instinctive part of my daily work. I am constantly walking the floor to identify areas of high interest and where things can be improved to catch the eye of potential customers.

In the first episode Agnes Towler (played by Aisling Loftus) is encouraged to get out all of the gloves so that Mr Selfridge (Jeremy Piven)can browse through them all. She is subsequently fired for her actions, however, in today's shopping culture you would be applauded for catering to the customer needs. Imagine shopping in a place where everything isn't laid out for you to feel, try for size, or match to your outfit - crazy!

For those of you that came purely to see Selfridges Window Displays I have added a selection of my faves for you to peruse starting of with some vintage snaps...
