Morocco part i

A couple of years ago (oh my god it seems like yesterday) My summer shenanigans left me in Morocco for 10 whole days. And what a beautiful sight to behold. From Palaces to Graveyards and Markets to Street cats and who knew the nightlife would be so vibrant!

Instead of Daydreaming that I am anywhere apart from stuck on a grey commute every day I've decided to do a series of posts featuring some of my favourite aspects of Morocco.. Its too much for one post.

I decided to start with the graveyards. Personally, I like walking around graveyards especially in different countries. I find it intriguing how different cultures mourn the loss of their loved ones and celebrate the life of those who have passed away.

What I liked best in Morocco were the wire sculptures that were placed around the grave stones and how different they felt to those here in England. I hope everyone found them as interesting as I do.

Window Displays

I have worked in retail for a number of years now and watching 'Mr Selfridge' on ITV has opened my eyes to the ways in which idea of "shopping" came about.

I'm in my early 20s, easily described as part of the consumer generation and take pride in remaining on top of current trends. In my role as a visual merchandiser I strive to make our store the most exciting place to be on the high street and watching the  development of this advertising technique truly fascinates me.

The idea of "window dressing" and creating exciting store layouts  have become an instinctive part of my daily work. I am constantly walking the floor to identify areas of high interest and where things can be improved to catch the eye of potential customers.

In the first episode Agnes Towler (played by Aisling Loftus) is encouraged to get out all of the gloves so that Mr Selfridge (Jeremy Piven)can browse through them all. She is subsequently fired for her actions, however, in today's shopping culture you would be applauded for catering to the customer needs. Imagine shopping in a place where everything isn't laid out for you to feel, try for size, or match to your outfit - crazy!

For those of you that came purely to see Selfridges Window Displays I have added a selection of my faves for you to peruse starting of with some vintage snaps...

Labyrinth

Welcome to the crazy world of Labyrinth.

The film pretty much does what it says on the tin! Sarah (jennifer Connelly) wishes her brother be taken away by goblins, cue Bowie, the goblin king Jareth played by David Bowie whisks him away and Sarah only has a small amount of time to solve the labyrinth and get the brother back.

Not one of my "faves", THE COSTUMES however... WOW!! Highlights for me include a stand up collar Dracula would run and hide from, puff sleeves, sparkly headwear, leather, lace and feathers.

The mix of textures and contrast of silhouettes makes the whole thing worth while and visually exciting. The puppetry shouldn't go unmentioned as Jim Henson has done cracking job as always in bringing such fantastical creatures to life.

Lambada

Another cracking 90s no-expense-spared kinda movie. The girl, Sandy, although extremely annoying, does own some cute shirts with flamboyant collar detailing. Other golden nuggets of 90s fashion that crop up along the way include a tapestry waistcoat, floral dungarees and sideways baseball caps! Those kids were so hip with the hop! The leather clad HUNK of a teacher who happens to be amaze-balls at dancing and riding around on a motor bike and designing graffiti style t-shirts, spends most of the time trying to get rid of Sandy and it goes on for a while and is generally stupid. Interestingly he has a silver cross earring, personally, I think this is where Chelseas Proudlock got the idea!

The film isn't exactly 'high-brow' but its worth watching just for the costumes, they have everything from bikers to hammer pants and the glasses are as insane as the haircuts!

Wild at Heart

Wild at Heart is such an easy watch. Crazy and kooky. Nicholas Cage sports a questionable python jacket in his role as 'Sailor' whilst Laura Dern makes me want to wear more Lycra.

The passion and sexual tension in this film has an almost endearing quality to it. Its one of those films that makes you want to grab your beau, steal a cadillac and road trip across America

Lulas choice of outfits leaves little to the imagination, pink, lycra, lace and leotards pretty much sums it up but the massive blonde hair and grunge roots adds and edgier feel to the film. The overall look.. think Sandy in the end scene of Greece but bigger, dirtier and more 90s.

This image is so 90s it makes me want to cry, ooh look at those eyebrows!

Special mention for THAT CUFF! Snaps for the gothic oversized bangel and sharp red nails

The Warriors

Everybody's' favourite leather waistcoat clad gang. The film begins with the warriors being framed for the murder of Cyrus, leader of the Gramercy Riffs, the largest gang in New York. Everyone is keen to find the culprit and bring them to justice and the film follows the warriors as they battle each of the gangs who try to capture them on their way back to coney island.
Some of the gangs they encounter on the way include the Punks, the Lizzies, the Boppers, The Orphans, and the Baseball Furies.

This film offers some great costume ideas and is well worth a watch for all those interested in late 70s style and as always some great haircuts.
